Pepper Sprays

The old Mace or tear gas spray has been replaced by modern, effective pepper sprays.
Some of these self defense products are worn openly in a belt holster, others are smaller and more discrete. They have a range from around six to twelve feet, depending on the model. Some even have a dye which makes it easy for the police to identify your attacker later.
Whichever type of pepper spray you use, When it hits at attacker in the face, he'll be temporarily blinded and will drop to his knees immediately.
Once your attacker has been incapacitated by the spray, that's the time to pick up and run for safety.
If he had a weapon or if you consider him really dangerous still, you may wish to consider a follow-up attack of your own - such as a disabling kick to the head or to the kneecap.
(However, an assault like that this could easily get you into trouble with the law.)
