Aikido Breakfalls

Since you learn Aikido by throwing your partner and being thrown in turn by him, you have to learn Aikido breakfalls right from the start.

The back breakfall keeps you from cracking your head open, which is a common injury in real fights. The most basic of all aikido breakfalls is the back breakfall. You start to do this one from lying down on your back, then sitting, then squatting and then standing.

You learn to keep your head from smashing into the ground as you land, and you learn how not to place your arms and hands.

The way an untrained person tries to break their fall almost guarantees that they will break their arms, their coccyx (tail bone) or their collar bones.
