Koryo Katas - Old Aikido

Shodokan style Aikido, which was founded by Kenji Tomiki Sensei, divdes its Aikido techniques into two groups.

The ones that ars safe for free practice, at high speed and with full resistance by Uke were recorded and passed on through the Randori no Kata, which is also known as the Junanahon no Kata.

This contains a total of 17 techniques, 16 Aikido throws and one armlock hold.

The older, traditional Daito Ryu Aiki Jutsu type Aikido moves were carefully preserved in the Koryo Katas, which were invented by Tomiki Sensei and his assistant, Hideo Oba, Shihan. The old style katas are known as Dai Ich, Dai Ni, Dai San, Dai Yon, Dai Go etc.

The weapons kata, Dai San, contains empty-handed kneeling techniques, then standing, then defence against a Tanto knife, a Bokken (wooden sword) and finally a Jo (short wooden staff). It also ends with Tori, the defender, demonstrating defense when the Jo is grabbed by Uke (the opponent/bad guy).
