Aikido, Martial Arts and Self Defense
What do Aikido, Martial Arts and
Self Defense have in common? They're about
dealing with conflict and violence, bad things that happen
sometimes - which is why I believe we all should
have a self defense education of some kind.
In a world where law-abiding citizens are
mostly prohibited from carrying weapons, we are always in
danger from those who choose to break the law, whether
it's just in a moment's anger or drunkeness, or as a
chosen criminal lifestyle.
I really believe you should walk away if you can. But sometimes
that's not an option. This is why you need a martial
arts or self defense education.
And if we cannot defend ourselves adequately, we risk injury at
the very least in a violent confrontation. If you end up in a
hospital ward or morgue, it's no consolation that you might
have been 'in the right' morally or legally. This is where self
defence is important.
That cellphone in you pocket is fine for
calling help, but we both know the cops can't get to you in
time to stop your attacker. You're going to have to deal with
any violence, on your own, with just your wits and your self
defense education to save you.
I believe it's good to have some martial arts experience under
your belt. The physical exercise is highly beneficial, and the
skills can change your attitude and perceptions about life. You
have confidence in your abilities (but not over-confidence) and
your physical fitness and body language projects this around
you, like an aura.
The result is that you're less likely to attract trouble,
because trouble-makers will sense your confidence and look
elsewhere for victims.
I like Aikido very much, in fact I love it. But that's just
me... It's not for everyone, and the choice of your martial art
is a very personal one. It should be, because you can expect to
be doing it for many years, perhaps for the rest of your
life.
Not everyone can make that kind of commitment, so they need a
quick self defense education and dirty tricks, and/or a
self-defense product they can carry legally. It's just
different strokes for different folks.
Whichever course you choose, there is something for you
in these web pages. You will find step by step Aikido
instruction, Self Defense education and Martial Arts
information. Take your pick, and enjoy your journey.
