Aikikai Aikido Grading for 1st Dan Black Belt
www.roydeanacademy.com Music: “Aikido” by Roy Dean available through itunes on the album “Sound of the Way: Music for Martial Arts.”
First degree (shodan) black belt examination in Aikikai Aikido, under Julio Toribio, 5th dan. Gratitude to Sergei Merkushev, Ken Blaylock, and Sensei Toribio for the fantastic ukemi (martial arts breakfalls). This video was filmed circa 1999.
Admin (David)’s comments: A very nice grading video showing how hard a guy has to work to get his first dan black belt (shodan grade) in Aikikai Aikido (the original/traditional Aikido passed on through Morihei Ueshiba’s successors and family).
See how the aikido student has to prove he can handle a variety of situations and use a wide selection of aikido throws and holds … this applies against an unrmed attacker or an attacker who is armd with a tanto knife. Then they change to bokken (wooden sword) kata, and finally some Randori, where he is tested to see if he can stay calm and focused when dealing with multiple attackers.
Notice the Aikikai student wears a white belt right up until the time he is graded to black belt. This is the traditional way of doing things. Some martial arts purists say colored belts were only invented to keep Westerners from dropping out!
Once he gets his shodan black belt, the student is also allowed to wear the hakama – the baggy pants/skirt of the Samurai. (But female students are allowed to wear hakama right from the first day!)
diablos el aikido es muy bonito me encanta este deporte saludoss!!! 5 puntos
Pese a que sí haya federación, el aikido no es propiamente un deporte porque no hay competición alguna.
saludos
What exactly is Aikikai in comparison to the average aikido?
Aikikai is the original and still biggest organisation for Aikido, official authorized 1940 by the Japanese government.
So you could say the Aikikai Aikido is the original Aikido.
Aikikai is average Aikido… Aikikai is the original style, we follow O Sensei’s grandson, Moriteru Ueshiba.
Tori is huge compared to his Uke’s.
Very Clean and swift with no useless movements
Nice aikido moves. Clear and strong… Congratulations.
good work. Effective test and good sense of aiki. Congratulations to the teacher and the students
