Best way to learn self-defense at home?

Hey, David.

What would you recommend as the best way I can learn self-defense at home? I am all by myself and I have nobody to practice with.

Are there any good books you can recommend, videos or DVDs I should look at, web sites I should visit for this info?

I am looking for self defense, not some particular type of martial art. I have no particular leanings here. I just want something that will work for me when I need it, and I don’t want to limit my options.

Thanks in advance…

  1. Learning Self defense from a book or a movie doesn’t show you the exact techiniques you’ll need to be more effective in your techniques.

and you can’t ask the books or movies about any questions you may have.

so I’d say you may be out of luck there. The books and movies are good for reference only, and used for furthering techniques or learning another way to apply a technique that has already been studied.

the best way I could say to learn self defense is to take a self defense class, or study a Martial Art, sorry there’s really not any other way to truthfully say it, and learn self defense in a proper manner.

  2. The simple answer is that you CANNOT learn self defense on your own, at home. No way whatsoever. You need a knowledgeable and skilled instructor to teach you and to make sure you understand each important point. And you need other students to tussle with, be it sparring, grappling or just ‘attacking’ you in different ways so you get to practice a whole range of moves under different conditions. Even one training partner is not enough, unless you are both very good and experienced already. Otherwise you will get too relaxed and over-confident with each other’s routines. Stop fooling yourself and get out there and DO stuff. Watching videos or reading books is all in your head and isn’t enough. In fact it is no more than fantasy. Join a school and expend some sweat.
