Taser Shot Sets Aborigine On Fire

An Aboriginal man has burst into flames after Australian police shot him with a taser gun.

The incident occurred at the Goldfields Aboriginal Community in West Australia, where W.A. police officers had been trying to arrest the intoxicated man for petrol-sniffing. (Drug and alcohol abuse is common in these remote villages where there is little employment and nothing to do. And sniffing petrol is cheaper than buying other intoxicants.)

Police allege the Aborigine then held up a can of gasoline and a cigarette lighter and threatened them not to approach him.

The police say they warned the man several times but he would not comply with their commands. They then shot him with the taser gun, and the man’s petrol-soaked clothing immediately ignited.

The police rushed to put out the flames, but the Aborigine was severely injured. He was taken to hospital with third-degree burns to ten percent of his body.

A police inquiry will try to determine if it was the taser jolt or the man’s cigarette lighter which caused his clothes to ignite.

Being from the UK I’m not used to Tasers or reading about them as they are not used here. I wonder whether they are a good or bad thing as we seem to have more issue with controlling drunk and or violent people.

I recently was watching one of this ride along with the police type of programs and I was amazed how badly the UK police were at taking men down. There was a drunk guy who had been fighting and the police could not control him. He wasn’t a big chap but they couldn’t seem to do anything to him. In the end four big coppers just hung on him until his legs gave out. Pretty bad performance in my opinion.

Maybe a taser would have helped.

I also think that sometimes these accidents could be a blessing in disguise. If more people knew about how badly they could be hurt by a taser maybe they wouldn’t put themselves in front of one.

Hi Lyle. I have to admit don’t like the tasers being used, but it is better than having the cops having to shoot someone. These tasers aren’t supposed to do any damage, but people have died from them on quite a few occasions. But if the cops had been using their batons – especially if they were cracking heads – then it could well be the same. People do get killed accidentally when there is real violence, and it is quite unpredictable. You never know for sure how it will go. I think they should be better trained, and they should have regular refreshers in violence – its use and control. Unfortunately not many cops are Judoka or Aikidoka… more’s the pity! Back to the petrol-sniffing guy, running at the cops with a tin of petrol and a ciggy lighter… To the cops on the scene that would have been rather like watching some suicide bomber run at them. The man is VERY lucky he wasn’t shot dead. I would expect that if the taser hadn’t dropped him, another cop would (or should) have had his Glock ready. It is so easy for us to comment when we were not there, isn’t it?

  2. it is quite difficult to recover from Alcohol Abuse because alcohol is also very addictive just like Cigarettes and drugs.~:`

That is true Alex, thanks for your comment. I understand it is close to impossible to break free of such an environment… i.e. where everyone they socialize with, family, friends … and in fact, everyone they know, is busy getting smashed or stoned every day. There are many people there who inhale the fumes from petrol (gasoline fuel) to get high. Adults and children. There is a lot of drunken violence.
