Aikido Throw #7 (of 17), Randori-no-Kata

Udegaeshi (elbow wind-up Aikido throw)

Udegaeshi is technique number 7 of the 17 basic techniques of Tomiki Aikido, and the second of the five elbow techniques (Hiji Waza).

Udegaeshi aikido throw (arm entanglement technique) by Nariyama Shihan of the Japan Aikido Association (Tomiki-style Aikido). This is how you do the Udegaeshi Aikido throw:

  • Tori first attempts technique number 6, Oshitaoshi, by stepping to the side and gripping Uke's wrist with both his hands, thumbs down.
  • As you push Uke's elbow up to his face (to break balance), Uke resists and drops his elbow down.
  • Since Uke's elbow wants to go down, that's fine. You switch to udegaeshi. For his elbow to go down, his wrist has to come up!
  • Keeps hold of Uke's wrist with your right hand, and release his left hand.
  • Now, use your right arm to push Uke's forearm back towards Uke's right shoulder.
  • Insert your left hand through the triangle opening of Uke's bent arm, then lever with your left hand (thumb up, fingers extended and pointing down) to add pressure and power to your right arm.
  • You now have two hands working together for udegaeshi to overpower Uke's left arm.
  • Keep it bending backwards so Uke has to arch his back, (which means his balance is broken).
  • Step strongly forwards to execute udegaeshi, throwing Uke onto his back. (Be sure to let go of his arm as he drops, or you could be pulled off balance yourself.)
  • Uke finishes his fall from udegaeshi with a back breakfall.
